Trade Rumour 01/24/2012

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier

Trade rumours will be an on going post leading up to the NHL trade deadline February 27th 2012.
Here I will take a trade rumour that has gained traction over the internet, rate their probability, outline their details and give you my personal thoughts and whether or not it will benefit the leafs.

TRADE RUMOUR: Tuesday 01/24/2012

Jonathan Bernier to Leafs for a goaltender and top 6 forward.

Probability: Low
Jonathan Bernier can, and should be a starting goaltender in the NHL. At 23 years of age Bernier is young, sought after talent and has outstanding numbers to back it up. With Jonathan Quick having an outstanding season for the Kings, Bernier has filled the back up role well but will be looking to take on a larger role in the coming years. Only time will tell whether or not that is with the Kings. With the smoke clearing from Reimers break-out season last year with the Leafs it is evident that goaltending is an issue in Toronto. The asking price for Bernier is set at a goalie and top 6... for arguments sake we would be looking at something along the lines of Reimer or Gustavsson + one of Kadri/Kulemin or McCarthur. Personally I would make this trade in an instant in the hopes of receiving our first legitimate number one since the lockout. Unfortunately in the post-locket era cap space is an issue and with Reimer and the Monster (Gustavsson) both making more than Bernier, this rumour seems unlikely.

Don't get me wrong, I have my fingers crossed. Ideally we would see Bernier in the starting role with the Monster ready to come in if needed. A trade such as this would certainly aid in the playoff push and Bernier would look good in the blue and white.
